Adam Corneil and Unbuilders at BBOT Business Innovation and Sustainability Talks!

Unbuilders is Canada’s foremost deconstruction company. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, they unbuild homes by hand and salvage almost everything, including irreplaceable old growth lumber, windows, doors, cabinets, fixtures and appliances. Unbuilders maximizes the material salvage to minimize the cost, hassle and environmental footprint. The salvaged goods are then donated to charity generating a tax receipt for the building owner and reducing Unbuilder’s cost below traditional demolition. Their preferred charity, Habitat for Humanity, uses proceeds from the material sales to build affordable housing. Hiring Unbuilders satisfies the triple bottom line – planet, people, profit. They are proud to hold the City of Vancouver’s highest recorded salvage and recycle rate at 99.2% of a single family home.

Unbuilders salvages and recovers old growth lumber, a finite and precious resource. This wood was milled from 500 to 1000 year old trees rarely seen or felled today. They recapture this history keeping the irreplaceable lumber in the supply chain. By documenting their projects with pictures and videos they uncover the story of the building’s history. They are not only salvaging materials, they are salvaging our local history.
