My niece and I are both garden lovers so when she stayed with us this past weekend my husband suggested we go to Loutet Farm (North Vancouver) which he had just discovered in the local paper. Not only was there an urban farm which was awesome in and of itself but there was going to be a party! There was face painting, garden tours, a balloon artist, a bouncy castle AND you also got to learn all about gardening, composting and recycling.
The occasion? Vancity was hosting a party to celebrate the bounty of summer and its community partnerships. We planted arugula and snap peas (free) took advantage of the Lions’ hot dog stand, took the edible garden tour and learned about how we could get involved in gardening or take advantage of the workshops that are regularly offered.
The Edible Garden Project is about food security, connecting people to food in their community, sharing it’s bounty and building community. I felt like I had stumbled on a jewel when I discovered it on Saturday.
